The second book from our very own Leading Consultant, Thomas W. Pauken II.
Overview:
Shenzhen Rising: From Fishing Village to World-Class City traces the development of Shenzhen as an international metropolis and “global knowledge city” in the last four decades. Located just north of Hong Kong and once a rural borderland, it was designated by the Chinese government as the country’s first Special Economic Zone as part of its reform and opening-up policy in 1980.
Since then, Shenzhen’s rapid growth has not only made it a model for other Chinese cities, but also serves as a microcosm of the transformation of modern China. No longer a “factory of the world,” Shenzhen is now at the forefront of Chinese and global innovation and a hotbed for entrepreneurship.
Hailed by the media as “China’s Silicon Valley,” it is home to China’s leading companies such as Huawei, Tencent, Ping An, and DJI. President Xi Jinping has also identified the city as a “core engine” of the development of the Greater Bay Area. Shenzhen is set to play a greater role in the integration of the nine cities in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
Lastly, the book not only examines the often neglected social and cultural aspects of Shenzhen, but also its potential as a smart city of the future.
